Tyre Safety Guide: A Simple Check That Could Save You Money

Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that makes contact with the road, so keeping them in good condition is essential for your safety. Regular tyre checks only take a few minutes and can help improve grip, reduce stopping distances, and even save you money by preventing unnecessary wear.

Know Your Tyre Size

Every tyre has a series of numbers and letters on the sidewall that tell you everything you need to know.

For example:

225/45 R17 91Y

• 225 – Tyre width (mm)

• 45 – Aspect ratio

• R – Radial construction

• 17 – Wheel diameter (inches)

• 91 – Load index

• Y – Speed rating

Knowing your tyre size makes it much easier to choose the correct replacement when the time comes.

Check Your Tread Depth

New tyres typically have around 8mm of tread.

In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.

However, it's recommended that tyres are replaced once they reach 3mm, as braking performance and grip, particularly in wet weather, can reduce significantly below this point.

The 20p Test

One of the quickest ways to check your tread depth is by using a 20p coin.

Simply place the coin into the main tread grooves:

✅ If the outer band of the coin is hidden, your tread is likely above the legal limit.

❌ If you can see the outer band, it's time to have your tyres checked or replaced.

Remember to test several points around each tyre, as wear isn't always even.

Check Your Tyres Every Month

A quick monthly inspection can help spot problems before they become expensive repairs.

Look out for:

• Low tread depth

• Uneven tyre wear

• Cuts, cracks or bulges

• Incorrect tyre pressure

• Damage to the sidewalls
